How many field-event attempts are available under the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship’s 8:8:6:4 format?

Under Regulation 8.9.2 for the 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship, non-vertical field events use four rounds with up to 26 attempts in an 8:8:6:4 progression. All eight athletes are entitled to attempts in rounds one and two; six highest-ranked after round two are entitled in round three, and four highest-ranked after round three in the final round. If fewer than six have a valid performance after round two, only those with a valid performance are entitled to additional attempts, so the total can be lower. This event-specific rule excludes vertical jumps and does not set a format for other meets.

The full four-round progression totals 26 attempts

Regulation 8.9.2 applies this model to non-vertical field events under the 2026 Ultimate Championship regulations. Eight athletes may take an attempt in each of the first two rounds; the six highest-ranked after round two are entitled to round three; then the four highest-ranked after round three are entitled to the final round.

  • Round 1: 8 attempts.
  • Round 2: 8 attempts, bringing the running total to 16.
  • Round 3: 6 attempts, bringing the running total to 22.
  • Final round: 4 attempts, for 26 total.

Fewer than six valid performances after round two reduce the field

If fewer than six athletes have a valid performance after round two, Regulation 8.9.2 gives additional attempts only to athletes with a valid performance. In a separate fictional case with five valid performers after round two, five are eligible for round three and the four highest-ranked after that round are eligible for the final. With all those attempts taken, that branch totals 8 + 8 + 5 + 4 = 25 rather than 26.

A tie at first or the last qualifying place has extra rules

For a tie on best performance at first place or the last qualifying place, Regulation 8.9.2 first applies Technical Rule 25.22. If that still leaves a tie, the Ultimate regulations use event-specific steps. In horizontal jumps, compare actual distances by adding the take-off gap rounded down to a full centimetre, then compare next-best actual jumps. If still tied, compare the official wind readings for the athletes’ longest jumps; the athlete whose jump had the lower tailwind or greater headwind ranks higher. If those readings are equal, compare the wind readings for the athletes’ next-best recorded performances on the same basis, repeating until the tie is resolved or all valid jumps have been compared. If the tie remains, the athlete who achieved the best performance first ranks higher. In throwing events, the athlete who achieved the best performance first ranks higher.

The jump/throw procedures are separate. Do not infer an actual tie, event field, ranking, or cut-line result from this format summary.

This format belongs to the 2026 Ultimate Championship

The event regulations state that they are the 2026 edition only and record approval on August 20, 2026. Regulation 9.1 names September 11–13, 2026 as the official competition period; a separate effective date is not stated. These dates and rules do not establish actual results, a future edition's format, or the rules used at another meet.

Two fictional progression branches

In a fictional non-vertical field event with eight athletes and at least six valid performers after round two, the full 8:8:6:4 sequence gives 8 attempts in round one, 8 in round two, 6 in round three, and 4 in the final round: 26 total. In a separate fictional event with only five valid performers after round two, only those five are entitled to additional attempts; five take the third-round place and the four highest-ranked after round three take the final, for 25 total if each entitled attempt is taken. These examples are not actual event results.

Related questions

Does 8:8:6:4 apply to vertical jumps or every World Athletics meet?

No. Regulation 8.9.2 says the model is for non-vertical field events under the 2026 Ultimate Championship regulations. It does not establish a general format for other meets.

How is a tie for the final qualifying place treated?

The regulation first applies Technical Rule 25.22. If a tie remains, horizontal jumps compare actual distances, including the take-off gap rounded down to a full centimetre, then next-best actual jumps. If still tied, compare the wind readings for the athletes’ longest jumps; the lower tailwind or greater headwind ranks higher. Equal readings trigger the same comparison for next-best recorded performances, repeated until the tie is resolved or all valid jumps have been compared. If still tied, the athlete who achieved the best performance first ranks higher. For throws, the athlete who achieved the best performance first ranks higher.

When were the Ultimate regulations approved and when is the listed competition period?

The 2026-only edition records approval on August 20, 2026, and Regulation 9.1 names September 11–13, 2026 as the official competition period. It does not state a separate effective date.
