What do “Q” and “q” mean in World Athletics track-heat results?

In the cited World Athletics track-result symbols, uppercase Q means an athlete qualified by place and lowercase q means the athlete qualified by time. The letters describe the route to the next round; they do not set a universal number of qualifiers or time cutoff. Read them with the competition’s progression table and tie rules. When qualification is by time, the technical rules also require one timing system for the comparison.

In track results, uppercase and lowercase letters differ

For Track Events, Q marks qualification by place and q marks qualification by time. The same letters can stand for different criteria in field-event results, so read them in the event context.

Other result symbols add a suffix for a different route forward, such as a referee decision, jury of appeal, or draw. A plain q in a track heat means qualification by time.

The event table determines how many athletes advance

A meet may specify that a certain number advance from each heat by place, with additional athletes selected by time. That table—not Q or q alone—sets the number and the applicable time comparisons.

For time qualification, the cited technical rules call for one timing system. A tie at the last place, competition-specific tie rules, and available lanes may affect how progression is resolved. Do not infer advancement from a current result without the event’s regulations.

Use the rule edition for the meet

The consolidated rulebook’s history table lists a change to Competition Rule 25.4 approved on 17 March 2021 and effective on 1 November 2021. This does not establish the adopted rules or number of qualifiers for every competition; use that meet’s published progression table.

A fictional progression table

Assume a fictional meet publishes a rule that the first two athletes in each heat qualify by place and the next two fastest athletes qualify by time. Athlete A finishes second in a heat and is marked Q. Athlete B finishes outside the first two but has one of the two fastest remaining times and is marked q. A tie for the final place or available lanes could change how the meet applies its progression rules. This example is hypothetical and does not predict a real athlete’s advancement.
