How far apart are the hurdles in the standard 100m, 110m, 300m, and 400m hurdle races?
Standard 100m, 110m and 400m races have ten hurdles; a 300m race has seven. The men’s 110m layout is 13.72m from the start to the first hurdle, 9.14m between hurdles and 14.02m from the last hurdle to the finish. The women’s 100m layout is 13.00m, 8.50m and 10.50m. Both men’s and women’s 300m layouts use 50.00m, 35.00m and 40.00m; both 400m layouts use 45.00m, 35.00m and 40.00m. The rule keeps men’s age groups and women’s age groups in separate event tables.

World Athletics lists the standard hurdle distances for men, U20 men and U18 men as 110m, 300m and 400m. For women, U20 women and U18 women, the listed distances are 100m, 300m and 400m. Start with the right group before using a spacing row.

Read all three distances in the row
The first measurement runs from the start line to hurdle one. The middle measurement is the gap between successive hurdles. The last measurement runs from the final hurdle to the finish line. These are separate distances; the start-to-first gap is not the same as the repeated middle gap.
- Men’s 110m: 13.72m to hurdle one, 9.14m between hurdles, 14.02m from hurdle ten to the finish.

A fictional 300m layout
Imagine a fictional U20 men’s 300m race. The standard row has seven hurdles: 50.00m from the start to hurdle one, six 35.00m gaps, then 40.00m from hurdle seven to the finish. Those segments add to 300m. This illustrates the table, not a real meet setup.
