Are decathlon and heptathlon standings decided by event wins or total points, and what happens to equal totals?
Combined-events standings are based on total points, not the number of individual events won. If athletes finish with equal point totals for a placing, the retained rule treats that as a tie and does not add an event-wins countback.

The cumulative total orders the field
Each individual event contributes a score under the applicable Combined Events Scoring Tables. The official total combines those event scores, and that cumulative point total determines the overall order. An event placing and its points are different pieces of information.
The rule calls for individual-event and cumulative scores to be announced. It does not require a viewer to reconstruct points from raw marks to understand the tie rule.
An equal total stays a tie
When two or more athletes have the same total points for a place, the retained rule says they tie. It provides no countback based on who won more events.
Use already-awarded totals when explaining this rule. Do not turn an invented mark into points or reproduce a scoring-table formula as a shortcut.
Two fictional equal totals
Suppose two fictional athletes have already been awarded 8,500 points each under the appropriate tables. One won four individual events and the other won two. Because their final point totals are equal, they share the place under the rule; event-win counts do not break the tie. The point total is invented for illustration and is not converted from invented marks.
