May a freestyle swimmer stand on the pool bottom or pull the lane rope?
Under the World Aquatics Competition Regulations, Version February 2026, an athlete may stand on the pool bottom during a Freestyle event or the Freestyle portion of a Medley. That limited exception does not allow walking, a stride or step from the bottom during a turn, or pulling the lane rope. A turn also requires physical contact with the wall, and the Referee determines whether a breach occurred.

The standing exception applies only to Freestyle
Article 10.2.4 generally prohibits standing or walking on the pool bottom, while allowing an athlete to stand during a Freestyle event or the Freestyle portion of a Medley. The rule grants permission to stand; it does not create permission to walk along the bottom.
Turns and lane ropes have separate restrictions
During a turn, an athlete must make physical contact with the wall and, subject to the standing exception, must not take a stride or step from the pool bottom. Article 10.2.5 separately prohibits pulling on the lane rope. One allowance does not cancel these other requirements.
The Referee determines a breach
Article 10.3 says the Referee disqualifies an athlete if the Referee determines, in the Referee’s sole discretion, that the athlete breached an Article 10.2 requirement. These provisions explain the procedure; they do not establish what happened in a particular race.
Three fictional Freestyle situations
In one fictional Freestyle race, an athlete briefly stands on the pool bottom and resumes swimming without walking; Article 10.2.4 contains a limited standing allowance for this event type. In another, an athlete pulls the lane rope, a separately prohibited action. In a third, an athlete takes a stride from the pool bottom during a turn instead of only making the required wall contact. These examples explain different written rules and do not issue an official disqualification.
