Which times determine a swimmer’s lane in heats and semi-finals?

Under the World Aquatics Competition Regulations, Version February 2026, heat entrants are ranked by the fastest event-specific competition times submitted for entry. If heats are held, official heat times—not the original entry times—rank swimmers for lane assignment within an already allocated semi-final. For direct semi-finals, entry times are used instead.

Entry times seed the heats

The submitted time is for the same stroke and distance as the event. The Management Committee ranks the entered athletes from fastest to slowest, then applies the event rules to form heats and assign their lanes. This page explains the time ranking and lane map; it does not reconstruct the full heat-allocation procedure.

Semi-final lanes use a different time source

When heats have been held, Article 3.3.4 uses the official times from those heats to rank athletes for lane assignments in their already allocated semi-final groups. The entry list is no longer the lane-ranking source. For direct semi-finals with no heats, the entry-time ranking is used under Articles 3.3.1 and 3.3.4.

The fastest swimmers receive the central lanes

In a six-lane pool, the fastest swimmer is assigned lane three and the second fastest lane four. In eight- and ten-lane pools, those lanes are four and five. With an odd number of lanes, the fastest is in the centre and the second fastest is in the next lane to the left; remaining athletes are placed outward from those central lanes. Lane numbering is viewed from the regular starting end. For a 50m event swum from the regular turning end, the rules still calculate lane numbers from the regular starting end.

A fictional eight-lane heat and semi-final

In a fictional eight-lane heat that has already been formed, the athlete with the fastest submitted entry time receives lane four. Later, assume an eight-lane semi-final group has already been allocated. A different swimmer has the fastest official time within that group and receives lane four; the former fastest entry is second within the group and receives lane five. This lane example does not say who advances to a final or how the heats were formed.

Does the entry time always determine a semi-final lane?

Only when semi-finals are held directly without heats. When heats were held, official heat times rank athletes for semi-final lanes.
