When may a backstroke swimmer roll onto the breast during a turn?

Part Two Article 6.4 allows a Backstroke swimmer’s shoulders to turn over vertical onto the breast during the turn. The swimmer must touch the wall with some part of the body and must be back on leaving it; an immediate continuous single-arm pull or simultaneous double-arm pull may be used to initiate the turn.

For Backstroke fans and swimmers trying to understand the permitted turn movement and wall-touch requirement. · Updated

The turn includes a wall touch and a permitted rotation

Article 6.4 requires the swimmer to touch the wall with at least one part of the body. During the turn, the shoulders may rotate past vertical onto the breast. The rule does not require a hand touch specifically.

After that rotation, an immediate continuous single-arm pull or an immediate continuous simultaneous double-arm pull may be used to initiate the turn. The wording describes permitted ways to initiate it; it does not make one particular arm movement a mandatory step in every turn.

The swimmer must be back on leaving the wall

The required position is tied to leaving the wall: the swimmer must have returned to the back when leaving it. Keep that point distinct from the permitted shoulder rotation during the turn.

These statements describe Part Two Article 6.4 in the February 2026 World Aquatics Competition Regulations. They do not establish which edition a local meet has adopted or decide whether a real turn complied.

Fictional Backstroke turn

In a fictional turn, the swimmer’s shoulders rotate past vertical onto the breast, an immediate continuous simultaneous double-arm pull initiates the turn, some part of the body touches the wall, and the swimmer returns to the back when leaving it. This illustrates the rule text and is not an officiating decision about a real race.
