Which races have semi-finals or timed finals at the World Aquatics 25m and Junior Championships?
At the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) and World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships under the Version February 2026 Competition Regulations, 50m and 100m events have heats, semi-finals, and finals; events of 200m or more have heats and finals. The Management Committee may instead use timed finals for the 800m and 1500m Freestyle, with only the fastest heat held in the finals session.

The rule is limited to two named championships
Article 3.7 applies to the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) and the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships. It does not describe every swimming competition, the Olympic Games, or all long-course championship meets.
The event distance sets the usual rounds
For events of 200m or more, the listed format is heats and finals. Article 3.7.3 provides a specific option for the 800m and 1500m Freestyle: the Management Committee may choose timed finals, as described below.
The long Freestyle timed-final option is discretionary
The Management Committee may conduct the 800m and 1500m Freestyle on a timed-final basis. If it chooses that option, only the fastest heat is held during the finals session. The rule describes an available format; it does not establish that the committee selected it for a particular meet.
A fictional program at the 25m Championships
Imagine a fictional program at the World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) listing the 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, and 800m Freestyle. The 100m has heats, semi-finals, and a final; the 200m has heats and a final. For the 800m, a timed-final arrangement depends on the Management Committee’s choice, and only the fastest heat would be in the finals session if that option is selected. This example does not state a real meet’s decision.
