How should appearances with missing venue evidence affect a same-venue sample?

Exclude appearances with no venue evidence from the same-venue match count, and report how many of the ten had a usable venue. That keeps the match count and its coverage clear.

Keep two counts visible

For a last-ten comparison, first identify which completed appearances have a recorded named venue. Among those known entries, count the appearances with the same named venue as the current event.

Report both numbers: same-venue matches among venue-known appearances, and venue-known appearances out of ten. Entries without venue evidence are unknown, not confirmed matches or confirmed non-matches.

Do not silently turn unknown into no

If you count missing venues as non-matches, the result can look more certain than the source allows. If you count them as matches, it can overstate the sample. Keep them outside the match comparison and disclose the missing coverage.

This is a reporting method for the catalog’s specific last-ten question. It does not establish that BSD has complete appearance or venue data for a participant.

Keep the comparison tied to the current event

The “same venue” test uses the named location at the same precision. A city-level record should not be treated as a match to a specific stadium unless the source supports that identification. If the current event’s venue is itself uncertain, state that before describing a comparison.

Hypothetical last-ten worksheet

Fictional example, not BSD data: of ten completed appearances, six have named venues; three of those six match the current event’s named venue. Report “3 matches among 6 venue-known appearances; venue evidence covers 6 of 10.” Keep the other four as missing venue evidence, not as confirmed non-matches.

Do appearances with no venue count as different venues?

No. Missing venue evidence is unknown. Exclude it from the match count and report the number of usable entries.

Should the sample still be called ten same-venue appearances?

No. Describe the ten-record window and the smaller venue-known comparison separately.
