After a Rugby Union 20-minute red card, who can return to restore the team?
Only a competition using the Elite Rugby replacement rule can restore a player after a 20-minute red card. The sent-off player never returns. After the required 20 minutes of playing time, Law 3.33(f) allows a tactically replaced teammate to return in that player’s place; a permanent red for an intentional and highly dangerous action cannot be replaced.

A 20-minute replacement red is not a permanent red
Law 9.30 says a sent-off player takes no further part. In Elite Rugby, a player sent off for an intentional and highly dangerous action cannot be replaced. For other actions, the team may replace the sent-off player after 20 minutes of playing time. The carded player does not come back.
A tactical replacement may return to fill the place
Law 3.33(f) allows a tactically replaced teammate to return after 20 minutes of playing time to replace a teammate who received a qualifying red card. World Rugby’s implementation guideline says the period is measured from the initial incident and that an available member of the replacements bench may come on or return.
Confirm the competition’s classification and law edition
Elite Rugby is a professional level determined by the union or competition for which specified laws and protocols apply. The 20-minute replacement moved into full law from 1 July 2026, with the July changes applying to new competitions or events starting after that date. For a competition already in progress, check the union’s implementation and the competition’s law edition.
A fictional Elite Rugby red-card sequence
In a hypothetical Elite Rugby match using the 20-minute replacement rule, one player receives a qualifying replacement red card and takes no further part. After 20 minutes of playing time from the initial incident, a previously tactically replaced reserve returns to replace that teammate. In a separate hypothetical case, a red card for an intentional and highly dangerous action is permanent and the team cannot replace the sent-off player. These examples describe rules, not a real match or disciplinary decision.
