Does being a club member give me permission to republish its resources?

Being able to read a club resource does not, by itself, establish permission to copy or republish it elsewhere. Before sharing a full text, chart, image, or attachment, check the terms that apply and ask the creator or actual rights holder whether your intended use is allowed. A creator may not own every element included in a resource. Copyright exceptions and rules depend on the facts and jurisdiction, so this guide is general information rather than legal advice.

For BSD club members considering copying or reposting a creator's resource · Updated

Reading access and reuse permission answer different questions

A club may allow an eligible member to read its resources. That access decision does not automatically answer whether the member may make copies, distribute the material publicly, adapt it, or post it on another service. Treat the ability to open a resource as access to read, not as a general license to republish.

Check the terms and the rights holder

Identify the material you plan to reuse and how you plan to share it. Review any license or terms that apply, and ask the creator or rights holder for permission when needed. A resource can include material created by someone else, so the person who posted it may not have authority to grant every requested use.

Do not rely on membership or attribution alone

Membership, a public link, or naming the creator does not by itself settle the permission question. The U.S. Copyright Office explains that permission or a license may be needed to use another person’s work, while also noting that legal limitations and exceptions can apply. For a specific reuse decision, consult qualified legal guidance in the relevant jurisdiction.

Hypothetical example: sharing a resource excerpt

Imagine a member wants to repost a creator’s full chart in a public newsletter. The fact that the member could read the chart inside the club does not establish permission to publish it elsewhere. The member should check the applicable terms and ask the rights holder about that specific use before copying it.

Does crediting the creator make a repost permitted?

Attribution identifies a source, but it does not by itself establish that you have permission to reproduce or distribute the material. Check the applicable terms and rights.

Can an exception allow reuse without permission?

Some legal limitations and exceptions may apply, depending on the facts and jurisdiction. This guide cannot determine whether a particular use qualifies.
