Why are a sport's regulation format and a sportsbook's settlement terms separate?
The organizer’s regulation or completion format describes the event. The sportsbook’s rules for the exact market describe how that wager is settled. One source does not replace the other.

Event rules describe how the contest is run
An organizer may publish a regulation length or completion format for an event. That explains the event’s official structure. It does not automatically define the scope of every sportsbook market tied to it.
The catalog’s format question asks for what is officially specified for the event. Keep that information attached to the event source.
The exact market has its own settlement terms
A sportsbook market can define which portion or outcome counts for that wager. Read the terms for the exact market on the exact book rather than assuming they mirror the organizer’s regulation format. Rules can differ by market, so do not transfer one market’s settlement language to another.
The event format and market terms may overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A sporting result alone does not tell you every market’s settlement treatment.
Use each source for its own claim
When discussing an event, cite the organizer’s format. When interpreting a wager, verify the sportsbook’s current market terms. If those terms are unavailable or unclear, leave the settlement question open instead of inferring it. This page explains source boundaries; it does not claim BSD places wagers or guarantees a settlement result.
Hypothetical market scope
Fictional example: an event source specifies its official completion format, while a sportsbook market separately defines what portion of play counts. Use the event source for the format and the market’s own current terms for settlement; do not assume the two scopes are identical.
