Why should an official ranking always be read with its system and date?

A ranking position needs its named system and snapshot date. Different competitions or ranking methods can order participants differently, and standings can change as results are added. A number without its system and date is incomplete evidence. For a comparison, use the same relevant competition or clearly name each system, record the cutoff, and do not present an old position as current. A ranking describes a dated table; it is not a prediction of a future result.

Say which ranking or table you mean

An official position may refer to a league table, tournament seed, points list, or another ranking system. Those labels can have different membership and ordering rules. Name the system and relevant competition instead of reporting an unqualified place.

  • Record the official system or competition-table name.
  • Identify the participant and competition scope.
  • Keep positions from different systems in separate rows.

Attach the position to a cutoff date

A position is a snapshot. If one source is captured before a round and another afterward, their differences may reflect timing rather than a data error. Record when the table was observed and compare positions from matching cutoffs when possible.

Do not call an undated position current

If the capture date or source is missing, describe the position as unverified or unavailable rather than current. A dated historical ranking can provide context, but it does not determine the outcome of the next event or establish a participant's future performance.

Hypothetical example: two dated tables differ

Imagine a fictional competitor appears in one official table captured before a competition round and in a separate points ranking captured afterward. The systems use different snapshots and may use different rules. Keep both labels and dates; do not merge them into a single current position or call either record wrong without checking its source. This example uses no real participant or current ranking.

Can I compare two positions from different ranking systems?

You can describe each position with its own system and date, but do not treat the numbers as directly comparable unless the systems and scopes are aligned.
