How is provisional availability different from a confirmed event entry?

Provisional availability is a tentative status as published by its source; it is not the same as a confirmed entry or a sport-defined starting designation. Check the exact event record, preserve its wording and time, and update the evidence only when a newer authoritative record is available. BSD's research source does not promise current provider data for every event.

Keep the source's status words intact

An event-specific source may publish a provisional or tentative designation before a final entry or lineup is available. Record the exact status rather than rewriting it as confirmed, active, or starting. Terms vary by sport and source, so use the label the record actually provides.

Also keep the event identity and publication or capture time with the status. A later report may change the evidence, but an older provisional label does not update itself.

Availability and event entry answer different questions

A published availability designation and an official entry or starting list are separate records. For a team selection, identify the named roster members and sport-defined roles relevant to the event; do not use a broad roster to fill a missing event status.

The BSD methodology says answers come from records actually fetched. If a current source is missing or the status remains provisional, that question should remain qualified or unavailable rather than be promoted to certainty.

Hypothetical: a tentative status has not been updated

Imagine an event record labels a participant's availability as provisional, while no later official entry list has been found in the checked sources. The researcher preserves the provisional wording, event, and source time, and does not describe the person as confirmed to start.

Related questions

Does provisional availability confirm that a participant will appear?

No. Keep the published status as provisional until an authoritative event-specific record provides a confirmed entry or starting designation.

Can a general roster replace a missing event status?

No. A broad roster does not supply an event-specific availability or entry status that the checked record does not show.
