What should I do when an old notification points to a renamed or closed club?

Treat an old notification label as historical context and check the current destination before relying on it. BSD resolves a community notification against the current club, account access, and source revision when it opens. If the club was renamed, the old label may not be the current name. If the club or source is closed, deleted, restricted, or otherwise unavailable, refresh to check current status; refresh is not a promise to restore access or recover removed content.

For BSD members opening a community notification that refers to a renamed, closed, or unavailable club · Updated

The label records the earlier context

A notification was created for a particular source and moment. Its historic label is not a guarantee that the club still has that name or that the source remains in the same state. When a club has been renamed, use the current club information returned for the notification’s destination rather than treating an old label as authoritative.

Opening checks current identity, access, and source

The app fetches the current club and checks that it belongs to the signed-in recipient and that the recipient can read it. It then checks the referenced discussion and revision before navigating. A closed club, removed source, changed access, or other unavailable state can prevent opening even when the old notification remains in view.

Refresh to check, then ask the owner if the source is still unclear

The inbox’s unavailable message can mean that activity is unavailable or could not be checked; it does not identify one cause. Refresh is a supported way to check current activity. If you still expect the source, ask the current club owner to confirm its status. Neither step guarantees that deleted or restricted content will return.

Hypothetical example: an old club name

A fictional member saved a notification when a club used the name “East Bench.” Later, the club’s current name changes. The member opens the old activity, checks the current club identity and access, and treats the historic label as context rather than assuming the name or source state stayed the same.

Related questions

Will refreshing restore a closed club or deleted discussion?

No restoration is promised. Refresh checks current availability; deleted or restricted content may remain unavailable.

Does the unavailable message tell me exactly why the link failed?

No. The message combines an unavailable source and a source that could not be checked. It does not identify a specific cause.
