What is the difference between clearing a notification and reading its source post?
People may use “clear” to mean removing an unread marker, but BSD’s individual control marks an activity item read. For a currently openable item while read-action recovery is ready, you can mark the item read without opening its source discussion. That updates inbox read state; it does not open, edit, remove, or delete the underlying post or reply. Open the source separately when you want to inspect the discussion.

Mark read changes the inbox marker
The notification screen labels the individual action “Mark this activity read.” The backend records the selected notification as read, or updates the inbox read-through state for a broader read action. Neither operation is a command to delete the original club discussion.
Opening the source checks the discussion separately
Opening an item resolves its current source and checks the current account, club access, and source revision before navigation. That action takes you to the discussion when it remains available and authorized. Marking the inbox item read alone does not perform that source read.
Use the control only when the item can be checked
The individual mark-read action is available for a current item when its read state is ready for a change. If the source has changed or the read action is still being recovered, refresh or wait for the current state rather than treating a stale screen as confirmation.
Hypothetical example: mark now, read later
A fictional member sees an unread notification for a club reply but is not ready to open the conversation. If the item is currently openable and the read action is ready, they mark the inbox item read. The reply remains in the club discussion; the member can choose to open it separately later if current access allows.
