When do repeated NHL face-off violations become a bench minor?
NHL Rule 76.7 calls for a bench minor for delay of game when the same team commits at least two face-off violations during the same face-off. A single violation does not meet that threshold, and one violation at each of two separate face-offs cannot be added together to meet it.
For Hockey fans trying to understand why a face-off violation can lead to a team penalty. · Updated
The trigger is same team, same face-off
Rule 76.7 counts the number of face-off violations by each team during one face-off. When the same team commits at least two in that one sequence, the rule specifies a bench minor for delay of game, announced as a face-off violation.
The count is not carried across stoppages. A violation during a later face-off belongs to a new sequence, so the rule’s threshold is not reached just because the same team had one violation earlier in the game.
A first violation and the penalty threshold are different
Rule 76.7 describes a face-off violation as requiring the face-off to be conducted again in examples such as a center moving prematurely or an official dropping the puck unfairly. It also lists other kinds of violations elsewhere in the rule. The team-minor threshold is about repeated violations by the same team in the same face-off, not a general warning count.
The rule does not make every face-off violation an immediate bench minor. Keep the specific count and sequence together when explaining why the team penalty applies.
Edition and scope
This explanation follows the NHL 2026–2027 Official Rules linked from the NHL FAQ checked October 15, 2026. The cited materials do not show a separate rule-by-rule effective date or amendment log, so this page does not infer one or extend the rule to another league.
Two violations in one hypothetical face-off
During one hypothetical face-off, one team is charged with a first violation and the face-off is reset. During that same face-off sequence, the same team commits a second distinct violation. Rule 76.7 then reaches its same-team, same-face-off threshold for a delay-of-game bench minor. If only one violation is charged in that sequence, the specific two-violation threshold is not met; a violation in a later face-off does not change that count.
