NBA team fouls and the bonus: how the penalty changes by period

Under the NBA 2025-26 Rule 12 text, a team gets four common team fouls per regulation period and three per overtime before the ordinary penalty applies. In each period’s final two minutes, one common foul can be penalty-free if the team was below its quota at the stated earlier checkpoint.

Regulation and overtime have different quotas

The rule counts common team fouls by period. In a regulation period, the first four common team fouls do not bring the ordinary penalty; a later common foul brings one free throw plus a penalty free throw. In overtime, the corresponding number is three.

A new period starts a new team-foul count for this purpose. The rule also lists some fouls with their own penalties, which should not be folded into the ordinary bonus explanation.

The final two minutes have one narrow allowance

A team may commit one common team foul in the final two minutes without the ordinary penalty if it had not reached its quota during the earlier checkpoint: four common team fouls in the first ten minutes of a regulation period, or three in the first three minutes of an overtime period.

This is one allowance for the period, not a reset or an unlimited late-game exception. After that extra common foul, the ordinary penalty applies to a later common foul over the quota.

Do not treat every foul as the same event

The Official 2025-26 NBA Playing Rules PDF lists flagrant, punching, away-from-the-play, clear-path-to-the-basket, and transition take fouls as carrying separate penalties and counting toward the team-foul total. The undated live Rule 12 page lists the first four but does not name transition take fouls. Because the live page shows no revision or effective date, the sources differ and this guide does not determine which edition governs a later game. These fouls' own penalties are distinct from the ordinary team-foul bonus described here.

A fictional regulation period and overtime

In a fictional regulation period, Blue has three common team fouls by the end of the first ten minutes. At 1:20, Blue commits one more common team foul. Because it was below four at the checkpoint, that one late foul is penalty-free under the listed allowance. If Blue commits another common foul at 0:40, it is now over the quota and the ordinary penalty applies. In a fictional overtime, Blue has two common team fouls by the end of the first three minutes. One common foul in the final two minutes can be penalty-free; a later common foul over three brings the ordinary penalty. These examples use only the cited rule thresholds.

Related questions

Does the fourth common foul in a regulation period automatically mean free throws?

No. The cited Rule 12 text gives the first four common team fouls in a regulation period without the ordinary penalty. It describes the penalty for common fouls in excess of that quota, subject to the limited final-two-minute allowance.

Do fouls with their own penalties count toward the team total?

Yes. The 2025-26 PDF lists flagrant, punching, away-from-the-play, clear-path-to-the-basket, and transition take fouls as separately penalized and included in the team-foul total. The undated live Rule 12 page lists the first four and omits transition take fouls; because it shows no revision or effective date, the sources differ and this guide does not select an edition for a later game.
