NBA loose-ball recovery vs. rebound: how are they different?
The glossary defines Loose Balls Recovered as gaining sole possession of a live ball that neither team controls. It defines REB as recovering the ball after a missed shot. Rule 10 describes when team control does not apply in certain situations; it does not decide how a tracking statistic is credited.

Start with the NBA Stats definitions
Loose Balls Recovered is defined as a player or team gaining sole possession of a live ball that is not in the control of either team. REB is defined as a player recovering the ball after a missed shot.
The first definition centers on gaining possession of an uncontrolled live ball. The second centers on recovering after a missed shot. Use the actual event and the source definitions instead of treating the labels as interchangeable slang.
Rule 10 is gameplay context, not a stat-scoring manual
Official Rule 10, Section IX, says that during a jump ball, a try, or a tap away from a congested area such as during rebounding, the ball is not in control of either team for the rule discussed there.
That rule explains a game-control condition. It does not define the NBA Stats Loose Balls Recovered category or supply a full play-by-play attribution method. Keep those sources in their lanes.
Two fictional possessions
In the first fictional play, a shot misses and Player A recovers the ball after it comes off the basket. That illustrates the glossary's REB definition. In a separate fictional sequence, a live ball is tapped away from a congested area, neither team controls it, and Player B gains sole possession. That illustrates the Loose Balls Recovered definition. These examples do not establish that the categories can never overlap in a real tracking decision.
Related questions
Does Rule 10 say that every uncontrolled ball is a Loose Ball Recovered?
No. Rule 10 addresses team control in specified gameplay situations. The NBA Stats Glossary separately defines Loose Balls Recovered, and the rulebook page is not a complete statistical attribution guide.
Are rebounds and loose-ball recoveries always mutually exclusive?
The cited glossary entries describe different concepts, but they do not provide every edge case or a complete attribution manual. Avoid making a universal exclusion claim from these definitions alone.
