How can muting someone affect club reply and like notifications?
For the recorded free-club reply and like notification sources, current recipient mute relationships are checked when the source is resolved. A matching mute can make that notification ineligible. Reading or marking an inbox item changes its read state instead; it does not change the relationship preference. The source does not promise that unmuting will backfill older activity or that every BSD notification category uses identical rules.

A mute can affect whether a source qualifies
The notification source checks the recipient’s current mute relationship against the activity actor and relevant source owner. For a reply, the source may include the parent discussion in that check. The exact result depends on the current relationship and source eligibility when BSD resolves the notification.
This guide covers the recorded free-club reply and like behavior only. It does not describe a mute-control screen or claim that every notification type in BSD uses the same rules.
- A mute preference concerns the relationship to an activity source.
- A suppressed item may not be created or shown as an eligible notification.
Reading an item does not change who is muted
The inbox read action updates notification read state. It is separate from the relationship checks used to decide whether club activity qualifies as a notification. Managing one item in the inbox therefore does not stand in for changing a mute preference.
The available sources do not promise that removing a mute reconstructs activity that was previously suppressed. Do not assume that older replies or likes will be backfilled after a relationship change.
A reply from a muted source
Imagine a fictional member has a mute relationship with the author of a free-club reply. When the notification source is resolved, that relationship can make the reply ineligible for the inbox. Marking an unrelated inbox item as read would not change the mute relationship, and unmuting does not promise a historical backfill.

Is muting the same as marking an inbox item read?
No. Reading changes the item’s read state; a mute is a relationship preference checked against the activity source.
Will unmuting restore earlier club notifications?
The source does not promise a backfill. Do not assume previously suppressed activity will be recreated.
