Does every pitch that touches an MLB batter entitle the batter to first base?

No. Under the 2026 MLB rule, a batter who is not attempting to hit a pitch can be awarded first when the pitch touches the batter, unless the pitch is in the strike zone or the batter makes no attempt to avoid it. Contact in the strike zone is a strike whether or not the batter tries to move; outside the zone, contact without an avoidance attempt is a ball. When the contact does not entitle the batter to first, the ball is dead and runners cannot advance. A swinging strike-three contact retires the batter, and contact only with jewelry is not treated as being touched by the pitch.

When the pitch awards first base

The rule requires more than visible contact. The batter must not be attempting to hit the pitch, the pitch must touch the batter, and neither stated exception can apply: the pitch is in the strike zone, or the batter makes no attempt to avoid being touched. If first is awarded, the batter must advance to and touch first. The qualifying hit-by-pitch makes the ball dead; runners advance only if forced by the batter becoming a runner.

Whether the batter swung, where the pitch crossed the zone, and whether the batter tried to avoid it are parts of the umpire's decision. A single still frame may not show the whole sequence.

When contact is a strike, ball or out

If a pitch touches the batter in the strike zone, it is a strike even if the batter tries to avoid it. If it touches the batter outside the zone and the batter makes no attempt to avoid it, it is a ball rather than a first-base award. In either no-award case, the ball is dead and runners do not advance.

A batter who swings and is touched by the pitch receives a strike; when that is strike three, the batter is out. That is different from a non-swinging batter who meets the first-base-award conditions.

Jewelry-only contact is different

The rule's Comment says a batter is not considered touched by the pitch when it touches only jewelry worn by a player. Do not treat that as bodily contact, and do not use a clip or photograph alone to claim which call an umpire made.

Which rulebook this explanation uses

This guide follows the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball's Official Baseball Rules, 2026 Edition. The book gives no separate day-level publication or effective date and states that its playing rules govern MLB and its professional development league system. Other competitions may use different rules or adaptations; this guide does not decide a real pitch.

Three contact situations

In a fictional at-bat, a non-swinging batter tries to move away from an outside pitch that touches the batter; the first-base award can apply. In that qualifying branch, the ball is dead and runners advance only if forced by the batter becoming a runner. In a second branch, the pitch touches the batter in the strike zone; it is a strike despite the effort to avoid it. In a third, a batter with two strikes swings and the pitch touches the batter; that is strike three and the batter is out. In both no-award bodily-contact branches, the ball is dead and runners cannot advance. If another pitch touches only a necklace, the rule does not treat that as the batter being touched. These branches depend on the full action, not a still image.

Related questions

Does any visible pitch contact mean the batter gets first?

No. A non-swinging batter must meet the rule's conditions, including the strike-zone and attempt-to-avoid exceptions. The umpire decides those circumstances.

What if the batter swings at the pitch?

A swing with contact is a strike. If that is the third strike, the batter is out rather than awarded first for a hit-by-pitch.

What if the pitch touches only jewelry?

The Comment excludes contact only with jewelry from being treated as the batter touched by the pitched ball.
