When must the cricket toss take place, and can the notified choice to bat or field be changed?

Under the MCC Laws, the coin toss for innings choice takes place on the field, with one or both umpires present, between 30 and 15 minutes before the scheduled or officially rescheduled start. As soon as the toss ends, its winner chooses to bat or field and notifies the opposing captain and the umpires. Once that choice is notified, it cannot be changed.

Measure the window from the applicable start time

Law 13.4 places the toss no earlier than 30 minutes and no later than 15 minutes before play is scheduled to start. If the start has officially been rescheduled, use that rescheduled time for this window. The toss itself is on the field of play and takes place with one or both umpires present.

This guide assumes the captains and umpire roles are valid. It does not select captains, explain nominations or deputies, or determine participation eligibility.

The winner’s decision locks once it is notified

After the toss is complete, the winning captain decides whether the side will bat or field. The captain then notifies both the opposing captain and the umpires. Under Law 13.5, the choice is irrevocable once notified; a later preference does not reopen it.

The Laws cited here do not establish that a later delay automatically voids a completed toss or starts a new toss. A specific competition’s playing conditions or event instructions are outside this guide.

A toss before an officially rescheduled 14:00 start

In an anonymous fictional match, valid captain and umpire roles are stipulated and the start has officially been rescheduled to 14:00. The Law 13.4 window is 13:30 through 13:45, on the field with one or both umpires present. The winning captain chooses to field and tells both the opposing captain and the umpires immediately after the toss. A later preference to bat does not reopen the notified choice under Law 13.5. No real team, player, weather judgment or strategic advantage is asserted.
