When can coaching happen under the ITF Rules of Tennis?
Under the ITF 2026 Rules of Tennis (English), the sanctioning body may permit off-court coaching at specified times. On-court coaching is limited to team events with an on-court captain and is allowed only at permitted times. Coaching is not allowed while a point is being played, and Rule 30 is subject to Appendix IV. Whether a particular event permits coaching depends on its governing rules.
For Tennis viewers and players interpreting coaching during a match · Updated
Off-court coaching depends on the sanctioning body
The ITF text does not make off-court coaching universal. The sanctioning body can permit it, with timing and conditions set for the competition. A player or viewer needs the event rules to know whether that permission applies.
On-court coaching has a narrower rule
Rule 30 limits on-court coaching to a team event with an on-court captain, and only at times when it is permitted. Appendix IV supplies additional coaching conditions, so the team-event exception is not a blanket permission.
The point itself is off limits
Neither off-court permission nor the on-court team-event condition allows coaching while a point is being played. This page follows the ITF 2026 English edition; the official text does not establish permission or adoption for every event. Check the current competition rules and Appendix IV conditions.
Two fictional event policies
Suppose a fictional individual competition’s rules expressly allow off-court coaching at named intervals. In a separate invented team event, the rules allow an on-court captain to coach at a permitted changeover. Those permissions apply only under the stated hypothetical policies; neither allows coaching during an active point, and neither describes a real tournament.

Can a coach always speak at a changeover?
No. Check whether the sanctioning body permits coaching for that event, the allowed times, and any Appendix IV conditions.
