What happens if you start a golf hole from outside the correct teeing area?

First check where the ball was, not where the player stood: a ball is in the teeing area if any part touches or is above any part of it, and the player may stand outside. If the correct ball was outside the required teeing area when starting the hole, match play has no penalty but the opponent may promptly cancel before either player makes another stroke. In stroke play the player gets two penalty strokes and must correct the start before the next hole begins, or before returning the card after the final hole.

Check the ball against the required teeing area

The teeing area is defined by the markers set for the hole. The ball is in that area when any part of it touches or is above any part of the area; the player may stand outside it. The starting-location rule also covers a ball played from the wrong set of tee-markers.

This page concerns a correct ball played from the wrong starting location. A wrong ball played from the right area is a different Rules question.

In match play, the opponent chooses whether to cancel

There is no penalty. The opponent may cancel the stroke promptly and before either player makes another stroke, and cannot withdraw that cancellation. If cancelled, the player starts again from inside the required teeing area and it remains that player’s turn. If the opponent does not cancel, the stroke counts and the ball is in play to be played as it lies.

The match-play result is not automatically loss of hole. The prompt cancellation choice belongs to the opponent and expires once either player makes another stroke.

In stroke play, add two strokes and correct the start in time

The player gets the general penalty of two strokes and must play a ball from inside the teeing area to correct the mistake. The ball played from outside is not in play; strokes made with it before correction, and penalties solely from those strokes, do not count.

Correct before making a stroke to begin another hole. On the final hole, correct before returning the scorecard. Missing the deadline disqualifies the player.

One starting error, two different formats

In a fictional match-play match, Priya plays the correct ball from outside the marked teeing area. Her opponent notices before either makes another stroke and promptly cancels; Priya must start again from inside the area. In a fictional stroke-play round, Marco makes the same location error, records the two-stroke penalty and replays from inside before starting the next hole. A player whose ball is inside the area may legally stand outside it.

Is the teeing area wrong if my feet are outside it?

No. The ball’s position controls. If any part of the ball touches or is above any part of the required teeing area, it is in the area even if the player stands outside.

Can an opponent cancel an outside start after another stroke?

No. In match play the cancellation must be prompt and made before either player makes another stroke.
