Why is a recorded finishing position different from a win-loss result?

A finishing position and a result category answer different questions. A placing reports where a participant finished within a field when the event format publishes that value. A win-loss label classifies the contest outcome under its rules. Keep the official result and any published placing as separate fields; do not turn a position into a win or loss unless an authoritative event source makes that classification.

Position and outcome are separate fields

A rank or placing can describe order among participants without saying how the organizer classifies the result. Some formats publish a placing, some publish another result method, and some do not provide a comparable position. Preserve the source’s own labels rather than assuming every event is binary.

Keep missing classifications visible

For a useful summary, identify the event, participant, official result wording, and any placing or field-size information actually published. If the source supplies a position but no win-loss category, retain the position and leave the category unknown until an authoritative record defines it. Do not fill a gap by inference.

Hypothetical result-ledger decision

In a hypothetical source review, an event record includes a finishing-position field but no separate win-loss classification. Preserve the position exactly as published and leave the binary category unresolved until an official event source supplies it. This is a reporting workflow, not a real result.

Does every event have a finishing position?

No. Include one only when the event format or official source publishes a meaningful placing. Missing position is not a position of zero.
