How is the F1 restart order set after a red flag?

For a suspended Total Time Classified Session, the 2026 FIA rule sets the resumption order from the last point at which the position of all cars could be determined. Cars in the Pit Lane or Pit Entry Road, and cars unable to return because the track is blocked, are placed using that same reference point. The rule explains order, not the type or timing of a particular resumption.

For F1 viewers trying to understand why a restart line-up may not simply mirror the visible order when the red flag appeared. · Updated

Use the last point when every position was known

B5.14.2 covers suspension of a Total Time Classified Session (TTCS), such as a race or sprint session. B5.15.1(b) says the resumption order is established before the session resumes.

The anchor is not automatically the instant the red flag appears. In all cases covered by this rule, positions are taken from the last point at which it was possible to determine every F1 Car's position.

Pit Lane and blocked cars use the same anchor

A car in the Pit Lane or Pit Entry Road when the TTCS is suspended is ordered by the position it occupied before suspension, using that last-known-all-cars reference point.

A car that cannot return to the Pit Lane because the track is blocked is brought back after the track is cleared. It is then arranged according to the position it occupied at the same reference point, not simply the order in which it reaches the Pit Lane.

Order does not tell you how or when the session resumes

This provision answers who is ordered where. It does not, by itself, establish a particular event's resumption time, starting method, steward decision or final classification. Those require the applicable event documents and decisions.

Four fictional cars at one reference point

At a fictional last point where officials can still determine every position, anonymous Cars A, B, C and D are ordered first through fourth. Car B is in the Pit Lane, Car C is in the Pit Entry Road and Car D cannot return because the track is blocked. After the track is clear, D is brought back; B, C and D are placed using the positions they occupied at that shared reference point. Their order is not recalculated from which one arrived at the Pit Lane first. This example does not imply a restart type or timing.

Does the order simply copy the cars' visible positions when the red flag is shown?

Not necessarily. For a suspended TTCS, the rule uses the last point at which all cars' positions could be determined, including those in the Pit Lane or Pit Entry Road and those unable to return because the track is blocked.
