When can parc fermé changes require an F1 pit-lane start, and how are pit-lane starters ordered?
Parc fermé limits changes to an F1 car after it first leaves the Pit Lane in Qualifying, or in Sprint Qualifying at an Alternative Format Competition. Work listed in Appendix B2 or approved by the Technical Delegate is excepted. A breach leads to a format-specific pit-lane start: Race at a Standard Format Competition; Sprint if breached before the Sprint at an Alternative Format Competition; or Race if breached after Qualifying starts. If several cars must start from the Pit Lane, their order comes from the relevant grid procedure, with late arrivals after the five-minute signal placed behind cars already at the exit.

Parc fermé begins at the first qualifying pit-lane exit
At a Standard Format Competition, a car enters pre-Race parc fermé when it first leaves the Pit Lane during Qualifying and remains in parc fermé until the Race starts. At an Alternative Format Competition, one period runs from the first exit in Sprint Qualifying to the start of the Sprint, and another runs from the first exit in Race Qualifying to the start of the Race. If a car does not leave the Pit Lane in the relevant session, the regulation deems it in parc fermé at the end of Q1 or SQ1.
While those conditions apply, a team may not replace or modify car parts or change setup/configuration, except for work listed in Appendix B2 or work approved by the Technical Delegate.
The affected start depends on format and timing
At a Standard Format Competition, a breach of the parc fermé rule requires the driver to start the Race from the Pit Lane. At an Alternative Format Competition, a breach before the Sprint starts requires a Sprint pit-lane start; a breach after Qualifying starts requires a Race pit-lane start.
Not every repair or adjustment is automatically a breach. The regulation permits listed work and allows other work only with Technical Delegate approval following a written request. For an approved replacement part, the cited rule requires the same design and similar mass, inertia and function to the original.
Pit-lane starters use the established grid order
A driver required to start from the Pit Lane must wait until the Pit Lane exit is closed before the scheduled formation lap, then stop in a line in the Fast Lane. If more than one car starts from the Pit Lane, they line up in the order established by the Sprint or Race grid procedure. A car reaching the end of the Pit Lane after the five-minute signal must start behind any car already at the exit.
Working in the Fast Lane is allowed only until 15 seconds before the formation lap and is limited to the actions listed in B5.3.3, such as engine preparation, permitted cooling/heating devices, driver comfort, wheel/tyre changes and the specified front-wing-profile adjustment. Personnel and equipment must then be clear, and drivers must follow the marshals’ directions.
Two hypothetical formats and a pit-lane queue
In a hypothetical Standard Format Competition, if a team made an unapproved setup change during pre-Race parc fermé, the stated consequence is a Race start from the Pit Lane. At a hypothetical Alternative Format Competition, a breach before the Sprint starts leads to a Sprint pit-lane start; a breach after Race Qualifying starts leads to a Race pit-lane start. For the queue, assume three anonymous pit-lane starters have an established order A, B, C. If A and B are at the Pit Lane exit before the five-minute signal and C reaches it after that signal, C lines up behind cars already there. These are rule examples, not claims about any real team, driver or Steward decision.
Related questions
Does every setup change after Qualifying require a pit-lane start?
The rule prohibits replacement, modification and setup/configuration changes in parc fermé except for listed work or work approved by the Technical Delegate. The specific consequence depends on format and timing.
What if a pit-lane starter arrives after the five-minute signal?
That car starts behind any car already at the Pit Lane exit.
Can a team do any work while waiting in the Fast Lane?
No. The rule permits only listed actions until 15 seconds before the formation lap; then personnel and equipment must be clear.
