What counts as a false start under the 2026 F1 rules?
For a 2026 F1 standing start or standing-start resumption, the cars must stay stationary after the third red light until all red lights are extinguished, be positioned so the transponder can detect first movement after the signal, and keep every front-tyre contact patch within the grid lines at the signal. The Stewards decide whether a driver breached the rule and which listed penalty applies.

The car must stay still through the signal window
B5.11.1 applies to a standing start and to a standing-start resumption. The car must remain stationary in its allocated grid position after the third red light is illuminated and until the start signal is given by extinguishing all red lights.
Movement detection and tyre position are separate checks
The grid position must allow the transponder to detect the moment the car first moves from its position after the start signal. The rule does not supply a permitted movement amount to infer from an image or a made-up sensor reading.
At the instant of the signal, no part of either front tyre's contact patch may be outside the front or side grid lines. A car can satisfy the stationary requirement and still fail this separate placement condition.
The Stewards decide whether to impose a penalty
The regulation says penalties are imposed at the Stewards' sole discretion on a driver judged to have breached B5.11.1. It lists a 5-Second Penalty, 10-Second Penalty, Drive-Through Penalty and Stop-and-Go Penalty; it does not let a reader predict which decision would follow in a real case.
A fictional grid-position diagram
Draw an anonymous car's two front-tyre contact patches inside the front and side grid lines, with the third red light and the all-red-lights-out signal marked as separate points on a timeline. In a second panel, move one contact patch just beyond a side line at the signal: that position fails the stated placement condition. The transponder must also be positioned to detect the car's first movement after the signal. This illustration does not simulate telemetry or predict a Stewards' decision.

If a car is stationary, can its front tyre still violate the false-start rule?
Yes. Stationary timing and grid placement are separate requirements. At the signal, no part of a front-tyre contact patch may be outside the front or side grid lines.
