GUIDES · BETSLIP DOCTOR
What should I verify before using a venue's playing-surface description?
Verify that the surface is officially documented for the exact venue and event. A sport’s usual setup is not proof of the surface used at this site.
For Bettors and cappers interpreting sports-record evidence · Updated
Start with the named site and event
A surface label needs an anchor: which event and which venue does it describe? A general description of a sport or facility may not identify the surface for the event you are reviewing. Keep the site, event, and surface connected in your notes.
The source question asks for an officially documented surface type for that venue and event. It does not establish that the field is populated for every event.
Do not substitute a common setup
A familiar surface for a sport can be a reasonable guess and still be the wrong evidence. If the event source does not document the surface, label it unknown rather than borrowing a description from another venue or assuming every competition uses the same one.
If two sources disagree, preserve which source describes which event or site. Do not blend them into one confident surface claim.
Report the source and its limits
When you do have an official description, retain its source and the event it applies to. Without that link, you have a venue or event record but not verified surface evidence. This guide describes an interpretation method; it does not claim a current surface lookup is available for every ticket.
Hypothetical event without a surface field
A fictional event listing names its venue but leaves the playing surface blank. The venue name does not fill that blank. Report the surface as undocumented in that source instead of inferring it from the sport.

Can I use the sport’s usual surface when the event source is silent?
No. A general expectation is not documentation for this venue and event.
What if I find a surface description for the venue?
Check that it applies to the same event and site, then retain the source that supports it.
