What should I check before comparing NBA TOV% with turnover ratio?

Check the exact label, table context and denominator. The NBA glossary defines TOV% as the percentage of plays that end in a player or team turnover. Turnover Ratio is turnovers per 100 possessions used, calculated as (TO × 100) / POSS. The labels are not interchangeable.

TOV% is a share of plays

In the NBA glossary, TOV% is an Advanced statistic with player, Four Factors and Clutch contexts. Its definition is the percentage of plays ending in a player or team turnover. The entry does not list a formula, so do not substitute the Turnover Ratio formula or invent additional denominator inputs for a table that omits them.

Turnover Ratio is normalized to possessions used

Turnover Ratio is the number of turnovers averaged per 100 possessions used: (TO × 100) / POSS. A separate glossary item, OPP TOV%, is a Four Factors team measure of opponent turnovers per 100 of the opponent’s own possessions. Read the label and context; the percent sign alone does not identify the denominator.

Before comparing columns, confirm whether the report describes the player, team or opponent, which plays or possessions are counted, and whether the time window matches. If a needed input is unavailable, leave the calculation unavailable rather than borrowing a denominator from another metric.

A fictional two-column report

Hypothetical team report for one stated on-court sample, with separate denominator inputs: in the sample used for the TOV% column, 6 of 30 counted plays end in a turnover, so this toy play share is 6/30 = 20%. For the Turnover Ratio column, the sample records 6 turnovers and 20 possessions used, so (6×100)/20 = 30 turnovers per 100 possessions. The 6-of-30 arithmetic describes only the fictional counted plays; the NBA glossary gives TOV% a percentage-of-plays definition but publishes no equation in that entry. The counts are invented, and the two denominators and resulting values are not interchangeable.
