Why does a close finish not put every fourth-quarter NBA possession in the clutch sample?

Because clutch status depends on conditions during the play, not only on the final margin. NBA.com describes clutch time as the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime when the score is within five points. A possession outside that time window or with a larger margin does not meet both conditions, even if the game later finishes close.

The time window and score margin both matter

NBA.com describes a clutch situation as the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime with the score within five points. Treat the time and score as conditions evaluated at the observation; a game-level label such as close finish does not make all earlier possessions clutch.

The NBA Stats clutch dashboard exposes separate Clutch Time and PointDiff filters. When comparing reports, note the selected season, time window and point-difference filter so the samples are comparable.

Check the clock and margin at that moment

A fourth-quarter possession at 5:10 is outside the final-five-minute window, even if the teams are tied. A possession at 4:40 with a six-point margin is inside the time window but outside the score condition. Neither observation qualifies under the stated definition.

A later possession can enter the sample if the clock reaches the final five minutes and the margin is within five. Overtime uses the same stated clutch definition, so preserve the period as well as the clock and score.

A fictional game that moves into and out of the sample

Hypothetical example: At 5:10 remaining in the fourth quarter, Team A leads by five, so the score is close but the play is outside the final-five-minute window. At 4:45, Team A still leads by five, so both conditions are met. At 4:40, a made three increases the lead to eight; the next observation does not meet the score condition. At 4:20, Team B cuts the lead to four, putting a later observation back within the stated conditions. If the game reaches overtime, apply the overtime time window and score condition there too. Record the exact filter settings used for any report comparison.

Does the final score decide whether earlier plays were clutch?

No. The stated definition uses the clock and score margin during the situation. A close final score does not retroactively include possessions that were outside the time or score conditions.

Do clutch situations include overtime?

NBA.com includes overtime in the definition. The score must also be within five points during the defined clutch window.
