Why does wOBA distinguish a walk from a double when both reach base?

Because wOBA weights batting outcomes by their estimated run value. A walk and a double both put a hitter on base, but they do not have the same relationship to scoring runs.

Reaching base is not one value

On-base percentage records whether a hitter reached base. wOBA goes further by assigning weights to walks, hit-by-pitches, singles, doubles, triples and home runs according to their run value in the scoring environment. A double can advance runners farther than a walk, so the outcomes receive different weights.

The weights are part of the model, not a claim that a specific event always produces a fixed number of runs.

  • Use wOBA when the question is about weighted batting outcomes.
  • Do not read a wOBA weight as a direct win probability.

Match the season and source

The weights change with the run environment. FanGraphs publishes season-specific constants; its table shows different values across seasons. When calculating or comparing wOBA, use the relevant season’s weights from one stated provider rather than copying a remembered constant into a different season.

If a source does not identify its weights or methodology, keep the comparison qualitative instead of inventing numbers.

Two fictional event mixes

Two hypothetical hitters each reach base four times in the same number of plate appearances. Hitter A reaches on four walks. Hitter B reaches on two singles, one double and one walk. Their on-base counts match, but their wOBA numerators differ because the outcomes have different run-value weights. No wOBA total is calculated here; use the chosen provider’s weights for the specific season before doing that arithmetic.

Can I reuse one set of wOBA weights for every season?

No. Use the source’s weights for the season being measured. The event weights change as the run environment changes.
