Why might the pitcher with the better outing not receive the win?

Because a win is a scorer-assigned decision tied to when the team takes a lead it keeps, the starting pitcher’s eligibility and the relief sequence. A strong outing can end without a win if the team never gives that pitcher a qualifying lead.

A win follows the lead and scoring rule

The official scorer credits the pitcher whose team assumes a lead while that pitcher is in the game, or during the offensive inning in which the pitcher is removed, and does not relinquish it, subject to starter and relief-pitcher rules. In a game lasting six or more innings on defense, a starter must complete five innings to be eligible; in a five-inning game, the threshold is four. If the starter falls short, the scorer chooses the most effective eligible reliever.

Those are decision rules, not a grade of every pitch or inning. A late comeback, a lead change, a short start or a scorer’s relief-pitcher judgment can change who receives the W.

  • Check game length and whether the pitcher was starting or relieving.

Quality start and run support answer other questions

MLB defines a quality start as a start of at least six innings with three or fewer earned runs allowed. It does not require a win. Run support per nine innings measures how many runs the offense scores for a pitcher while that pitcher is in the game, set over a nine-inning timeframe. It adds context to a record; it is not a pitching result.

Use the outing line, team scoring while the pitcher was in, and the final scorer decision as separate facts.

Two fictional starts with different support

Hypothetical Start A: the starter works seven innings and allows one earned run, but the team scores no runs while the starter is in and never takes a lead. The outing meets the quality-start definition, yet there is no win for that pitcher. Hypothetical Start B: the starter works five innings and allows three earned runs; the team takes a lead while the starter is in the game and keeps it through the finish. In a game lasting at least six innings on defense, that starter meets the five-inning threshold and may receive the win under the normal rule. The invented lines show why a W and an outing grade are different records.

Does a quality start guarantee a win?

No. Quality start uses innings and earned runs. A win depends on lead changes, eligibility and the official scorer’s decision.
