Can an outfielder cover a long distance while recording a modest jump metric?

Yes. Statcast Jump evaluates an outfielder's movement in the correct direction during the first three seconds after pitch release, while Distance Covered measures the full distance from bat contact until the fielder fields the ball. A modest early Jump can therefore coexist with a long later route to a ball hit far away.

Jump focuses on the first three seconds

Statcast defines Jump as feet covered in the correct direction during the first three seconds after pitch release. Reaction covers the first 1.5 seconds, Burst the next 1.5, and Route compares movement in the right direction with the fielder's total movement during that window.

The measure is reported relative to average, so it describes early movement on a particular opportunity rather than the full length of the play. The seasonal leaderboard includes plays with catch probability of 90 percent or less.

Distance Covered follows the full route to the ball

Distance Covered tracks how far a fielder moves from bat contact until fielding the ball. It counts total travel rather than only movement in the right direction during the earlier Jump window.

Because the windows and definitions differ, a long route does not by itself imply an above-average Jump. Compare the play, early direction and total distance instead of reading one measure as a substitute for the other.

A fictional long route after a modest first move

Hypothetical comparison: two fictional outfielders reach the same landing point on a ball hit far into the gap. In the first three seconds after pitch release, Fielder A moves only a modest amount in the correct direction, then covers a long route after contact. Fielder B moves decisively toward the ball earlier and covers a similar total distance. Their Distance Covered can be similar while their Jump figures differ because the measures cover different windows and movement.

Related questions

Does Distance Covered measure whether the route was efficient?

No. It measures total distance traveled from bat contact until the fielder reaches the ball; Jump's Route component compares correct-direction movement with total movement in its three-second window.

Does the Jump leaderboard include every outfield play?

No. MLB's seasonal Jump leaderboard uses plays with catch probability of 90 percent or less, and players need enough qualifying opportunities to appear.
