What does a Statcast catch probability describe about an outfield play?
It estimates how often comparable tracked outfield balls have been caught. The value belongs to one opportunity and its tracking conditions, not to a fielder’s career catch rate, and it does not change the official out-or-hit result.

The value describes one opportunity
Statcast assigns a Catch Probability to a tracked batted ball in the outfield. It expresses how often outfielders have caught comparable plays in the Statcast era, so it adds difficulty context to the scorebook’s simpler out or hit.
It is not a general rating of the fielder. Two plays can both be scored as outs while asking very different things of the fielder, and two plays with similar tracking inputs can still end differently.
Four tracking conditions shape the estimate
The MLB definition names distance needed, opportunity time, direction of travel and proximity to the wall. Distance needed uses an optimal route from the fielder’s starting position; it is different from the actual ground covered. Opportunity time starts when the pitch leaves the pitcher’s hand, which can account for a fielder reading the pitch before contact.
MLB reports Catch Probability in five-percentage-point bands rather than implying meaningful precision at every single percentage point. Read the number as a model-based description of the play’s difficulty, not a guarantee about what a particular fielder will do.
Two fictional tracked chances
Hypothetical comparison: both observations are batted balls to the outfield. On Play A, the fielder needs a short optimal route, has ample opportunity time, moves toward the ball, and is not near the wall. On Play B, the required route is longer, the ball arrives sooner, the fielder must move back, and the wall is close. Those are the four defined inputs to compare; no numeric probability is assigned here, and the example does not predict either catch.

Does Catch Probability measure a fielder’s overall catch percentage?
No. It is attached to an individual tracked outfield opportunity and uses that play’s travel, timing, direction and wall context.
