What is the difference between first serves made and points won behind the first serve?

First serves made describe whether the first delivery lands in; points won behind the first serve describe whether the server wins the point after that first serve. A successful delivery does not guarantee the point. The ATP article discusses these as separate statistics in a 2024 analysis, not as a current ranking.

One describes the delivery; the other describes the point

The ATP article published August 23, 2024 treats first serves made and points won behind the first serve as two distinct traditional statistics. A first serve may land legally in the service box, after which either player can still win the rally. Keep the serve result separate from the later point result.

The article is a historical analysis. It does not establish a current player ranking or prove that every competition or provider uses identical labels and observation rules. Check the source, event and season for any real table; this guide makes no current-player comparison.

A first-serve fault leads to a different delivery

Under the ordinary two-serve procedure, a fault on the first serve is followed by a second serve. That first attempt did not land in. A point played after the second serve is not a point won behind a first serve.

These are event distinctions, not a rate calculation. The ATP article’s historical discussion is not a license to supply a denominator or create a blended score that its scope does not support.

Two fictional serve sequences

Hypothetical singles match using the ordinary two-serve procedure; no season totals, percentages or provider formulas are assumed. Sequence A: the server’s first serve lands in the correct service box, then the receiver wins the rally. This is a first serve made, but the server did not win the point behind that first serve. Sequence B: the server’s first attempt is a fault, then a second serve begins. The first serve was not made; the later point is played after a second serve. The two sequences are synthetic and include no real player or match record.
